Professional Portrait Photographer
Hi! I’m Karen. Thanks for visiting my website. I’m happy to share with you some of my favorite portraits of the newborns, families, children, babies, high school seniors and professionals I ‘ve photographed in the Orlando area.
As a mother, I know how fleeting time with your children can be. One moment you’re celebrating the miracle of pregnancy and your beautiful newborn, and the next youʼre struggling to hold back tears as your child steps onto the school bus for the first time. Then, in a blink, your baby is a high school senior and nearly ready for the world.
My world is about family. I photograph newborns, families, children, babies and high school seniors in traditional, semi-traditional and lifestyle settings, both in my clients’ homes and outdoors in the Orlando area. My husband and daughter are the joys of my life and offer me endless inspiration and support for the work I do as a professional portrait photographer.
I hope to inspire visitors to my website to reflect on the most important people in their lives: their family. I’m often surprised when a new client tells me that they have many pictures of their children as newborns, babies, toddlers and growing up, but have never had a professional family portrait taken. I’m honored then they choose me to capture who they all are now. Today. It’s wonderful being a small part of their family history.
I am a proud and active member of Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and Florida Professional Photographers (FPP). I have extensive experience with digital photographic imagery (both color and black and white), which includes digital portrait editing. I use state-of-the-art equipment and software.
I would love to be a part of documenting the milestones in your life in photographs. I offer photos on CD, prints in a huge range of sizes, canvases, beautiful custom designed albums, and custom framing. I encourage you to think about where your precious photos are right now. On your computer or cell phone? Honor those you love with photographs that are frame-worthy and display them in your home on the walls, tables and bookcases. Display them where you can enjoy them while you “unplug” with those you love.
Greenleaf Photo Studio began as a small home studio, occupying a spare bedroom of my family’s home in Cincinnati. This space was used for my portrait photography, and also my room for meeting with clients for their consultation and ordering sessions. It measured about 16′ x 16′. My husband and daughter were incredibly tolerant of the closets in our house full of my photography equipment and props. I spent hours setting up for morning photo sessions with professional lighting, backgrounds and props, then took everything down for ordering sessions in the afternoons and evenings. The set up for the ordering sessions was just as elaborate… comfortable seating for multiple people, projector contacted to my laptop, then connected to a projector in front of a collapsable white screen. This was my life, 6 days a week for about 3 years. It really was a lot of work tearing down and setting up for the mornings and afternoons/evenings.
I finally decided to rent a small studio in the lovely downtown neighborhood of Hyde Park in Cincinnati. It was wonderful to have a designated place (about 500 sq. ft.) to shoot my portrait sessions within a mile of my home. I still conducted my ordering sessions in our home, but didn’t need to split the use of the home space into shooting and ordering anymore. This arrangement was perfect! Shooting was either at the new studio, or outdoors at a park or client’s home. I would meet with clients in my home for their ordering sessions.
In the summer of 2012, my husband’s job brought us to Orlando. I decided to plunge head-first into a top-notch studio space. I rented a studio on Park Avenue in Winter Park. It measured about 1,200 sq. ft. of perfect portrait photography space. High visibility and accessibility to fabulous Winter Park clients, and all the space I needed to do both photo sessions and ordering sessions in one place. No more working out of our home! I was thrilled, and my husband and daughter were happy that our home was just our home again. Business was great from the beginning. Everything was wonderful for about a year. Then…I realized that to keep up with my responsibilities and commitments, I needed to hire an assistant to help with my photo sessions, and I needed to out-source much of my photo editing work and book-keeping. I was also considering hiring another photographer to do sessions that I was to busy to do. Suddenly, I had become a photography studio manager, and was no longer just a portrait photographer anymore. I realized that Greenleaf Photo Studio had become a “for prophet” entity and was no longer a fun, small photography service that I had so much enjoyed providing to families. I wasn’t so happy any more, and longed for the close connection I had had with clients before the big Winter Park studio.
So, I decided to down-size back to where I was a couple of years earlier, and I moved out of the studio. I am now back to working mostly on-location. I go to clients’ homes for indoor photo sessions (like newborns and young babies) and shoot at parks for outdoor family sessions. I had never woked in client’s homes before, and found it to be a wonderful way to connect with them on a more personal level. I found that the babies and young children were more at ease in their own surroundings (vs. the studio setting), allowing me to capture more spontaneous and natural expressions. Parents love having me come to them because they don’t feel pressured to remember to bring every little clothing and prop item with them to the studio. No more traffic to deal with for the parents, either!
I have found my perfect balance. Traveling to meet with clients is more of a demand on my time now, so I have reduced the volume of clientele somewhat. Most clients now are repeat clients that I already have a relationship with, or friends that they refer to me. An intimate and long-lasting relationship with my clients was what I had wanted all along.
I’m so grateful that I’ve had the choices to conduct my business the way I want. I will be eternally grateful to my own family and loyal clients for being able to be true to what works best for me and Greenleaf Photo Studio. Thank you!!
